Picking Roles for the 2017 Edible Garden Project
August 2017 Written by: Joakim We finally decided as a class that we were going to begin to grow our own Edible Garden on the Green School campus. Being inspired by Katie's efforts in "Starfish Throwers," we felt as a class this might be our best way to begin. We first had to brainstorm different roles that we, the students, could take on to contribute to the project. Although many students want to be in the garden getting their hands dirty, we realized there are other roles to fill to make the project a success. To begin the process of selecting roles, we wrote down all the different possible and necessary roles on the board. As a class we came up with four important roles for our project: GARDENERS: In this role students are responsible for selecting the different fruits, vegetables, and flowers that will be planted in our Garden. They work closely with our Middle School Green Studies teacher Ibu Jaclyn each week as they get in the garden to plant and pick our crops. They are also responsible for maintaining a weekly watering schedule. A final aspect of their role in the project is to work closely with the Entrepreneurs to create and bring our recipes to life. BLOGGERS: A bloggers job is to create and maintain this blog on WEEBLY. The bloggers make decisions about what the blog will include including pictures, stories, and updates on our project. You can also find a section that talks about the inspiration behind our project and our goals for the year. The Bloggers work closely with all the other groups to ensure our website captures the full story of each groups role throughout the year. SOCIAL MEDIA SPECIALISTS: These students are responsible for sharing our story with the Green School community to create awareness and support of the cause and the goals. They created a hashtag (#GardenGuardians) for our project so people can easily find our posts on the Green School social media pages. The Social Media Specialists work closely all the other groups and with the Green School communications team. ENTREPRENEURS: An entrepreneur has a few different roles in the project. To begin they have been working to connect with different organizations in Bali that currently support those in need. We hope to donate to one of these organizations at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. The entrepreneurs are also responsible for securing a loan from Green School to get our project off the ground and for obtaining a table at the Green School Farmers Market to sell our sauces to the community. They are also the creative minds behind the labeling of our product. Next week we are going to start weeding the plants out of our allocated garden area and shape the beds so we can soon begin planting.
